I Read

Before I became a parent myself, I was a therapist providing counseling primarily for children. Now I am a parent of two as well as a therapist counseling children, families, and couples. While I try to stay current with the latest in all of the above areas, in my private and free time, I find myself reading as much as possible on parenting and raising responsible children. My children are my greatest joy as well as my most important responsibility.

My kids are 2 and 3 years old. Until recently, I have felt very much like a caretaker. However, in the last year I have felt that role shift. I am now an instructor, a coach, and guidance giver. During the first year or so, all my kids had to do was whimper or cry to communicate that they needed something. Now, as they grow older, this is no longer acceptable. I encourage them to use their words and take deep breaths to control their emotions. It is exciting to see them grow in communication and self-control. They sure do keep me on my toes! So I read. I read in an effort to understand and to have practical tools to raise responsible, compassionate, high functioning children.

My training has provided me with necessary skills and information to run parenting classes, to come alongside children, families, and couples in crisis and offer support, tools, advise, a listening ear. As a parent, I now get to practice all of what I have learned but it seems slightly different as with parenting comes: emotion, worry, and sometimes frustration. So I read. I read so I can remember all the things I learned and apply them on my own life with my own children.
